CMS Systems Compared

April 9th, 2010

Content Management Systems (CMS) allow the client to manage routine updates once the website is complete (usually done by a web developer or programmer). A site might be designed to allow the client, without any knowledge or experience in HTML, to update such things as contact information, event schedules and other content that is subject to change.

There are lots of CMS systems out there, and several of them don't cost anything. Choose which one to used based on the website you need. This does not list them all. There are a great number of very good Content Management Systems out there from which to choose. Look at the author's websites to make certain that the CMS you opt for is right for your requirements.

Joomla can be used for many things. You can use it for almost any kind of website. Personal websites, business websites for the small business or large corporation, online publications, and e-commerce. (Note that if you intend to use any CMS for an e-commerce operation, choose a package specifically designed with e-commerce needs in mind, such as Zen Cart or osCommerce.) Simple to install, Joomla's setup process can be completely automated if your web host has installed Fantastico.

Website Baker is PHP-based to make it uncomplicated. The PHP based system permits the user to manipulate text and images with great precision. If the user has familiarity with PHP, it can be completely re-done. Guru.com can refer you to PHP programmers available for contract positions. You will find this a surprisingly affordable solution. Useful add-ons are easy to incorporate into a Website Baker site; some popular add-ons include message boards, photo albums, catalogs, and acceptance of online payments.

Drupal. Drupal is not to be undertaken lightly; it requires specific training and education or a series of very hard knocks. The Drupal website even admits that there is a significant learning curve.

Mambo is very versatile, easy to use, and popular. You can obtain a number of themes from which you can create a good website with only minor changes.

phpWebSite is great and can be used for many things. A document manager, calendar, form generator, polling system and photo album are all available as add-ons. As is the case with the acquisition of all new information, Content Management Systems involve a specific learning curve. Some PHP knowledge is required in order to do most customizing.

Being a webmaster is a much more important job than most companies would dare admit. Webmasters are responsible for the company web presence on every level, from the website copy to the web and email server administration. Additionally, webmasters are often tasked even more duties that should be considered unrelated responsibilities for the position of webmaster. These extra duties often will include online as well as offline promotion and marketing, search optimization, advertising, application programming, graphic design and/or brand management. The role of the webmaster has grown over the years and webmasters need to grow with the company's expectations or the website will not succeed. For instance, it is easy to get banned from the search engines for not knowing the correct methods to use to optimize a website for a better results ranking from the search engines for any particular search phrase.

This is why Webmastery is here, not just to offer direction and assist webmasters, but to do so masterfully, as you expect of yourself, or as your company expects out of you.

Since I am an American and know only American English and SEO methods, I specialize in American Webmastery. Hence the domain name, Webmastery.US.

However, please note that often both sides of the coin are presented here. Some webmasters swear by Linux and we offer articles by such authors to give insight to their creativity. Others are die-hard Microsoft software fans and use Windows based servers. Despite the bias, each system has its own advantages, and such articles are reprinted here for their positive contribution to those platforms, not to enforce their bias. It is we that have to make the final analysis.

This difference is even more apparent when I am showcasing and promoting white hat SEO (search engine optimization) and a black hat SEO article is published here, which method if followed could get a website banned from the search engines. The reason I allow it a small platform is to showcase its apparent and obvious idiocy in contrast to white hat SEO techniques. And as I cannot edit these articles in order to correct them, I let their illogicality and stupidity stand on their own for a time without any edits. But in case their spaminess is not apparent, I often do not let such articles stand long.
